Despite the coronavirus throwing the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations into uncertainty, FC Barcelona and Cameroon icon Samuel Eto'o, who is the tournament's top goalscorer in history, is looking forward to the competition set to be held in his homeland.
Afcon 2021 is set to be played between 9 January and 6 February in Cameroon next year, but many assume that it will be pushed back to June 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the doubts surrounding the competition's dates, Eto'o has all the confidence in his native country to successfully host the Africa Cup of Nations.
"Cameroon is a unique country, it's a football country," he told RFI.
"The only regret I can have is that I cannot participate in this tournament as a football player.
"We were able to note with great joy all the efforts made by the Cameroonian government and the Cameroonian people by giving all the sportsmen and lovers of football a stadium worthy of the stadiums of Europe.
"We have nothing to envy today in certain European countries. Today, my young brothers have these infrastructures.
"We will do everything to make them ready to offer us one of the most beautiful Africa Cup of Nations ever organised.
"But the one that is beautiful for us will be the one that we will win. Cameroon will be ready for Afcon. Cameroon already has everything to host Afcon."
Eto'o, with 18 goals, is the tournament's top scorer in history, ahead of Ivory Coast's Laurent Pokou with 14 goals and Nigeria's Rashidi Yekini with 13 strikes.
