Mane Shines As Senegal Advance To AFCON Final

Senegal advanced to their second successive Africa Cup of Nations final after defeating Burkina Faso 3-1 on Wednesday night.

Africa Cup of Nations Semi-final

Date: Burkina Faso 1-3 Senegal

Date: 02 February 2022

Venue: Stade Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo

The game got off to a lively encounter as both sides came out firing on the onset, with Bertrand Traore going close on two occasions inside the opening 10 minutes.

The Lions of Teranga managed to carve out a chance of their own after 15 minutes when Kalidou Koulibaly set up Saliou Ciss who sent his effort just wide of the upright.

Senegal thought there were being awarded a penalty for Hervé Koffi's challenge on Cheikhou Kouyaté in the box on 32 minutes but after a VAR check, the referee changed his mind and decided not award a penalty.

While there was no penalty, there was still some bad news for Burkina as Koffi was unable to continue after the challenge with Kouyate and was replaced by Farid Ouédraogo for the rest of the game.

Senegal were awarded another penalty on the stroke of halftime when the ball seemingly struck Edmond Tapsoba, who was given a yellow card but after another VAR review, the referee reversed his initial decision.

The Senegalese enjoyed more of the ball, as they looked to find the breakthrough as Idrissa Gueye had a couple powerful efforts blocked 10 minutes in while Mane started having more of an influence.

Both coaches looked to the bench after the hour mark as Zakaria Sanogo replaced Cyrille Bayala, while their counterparts threw on Ismaïla Sarr and Pape Gueye.

The breakthrough arrived in the minute as Abdou Diallo got on the end of Koulibaly's ball in the box to volley home from close range to put Senegal ahead with 20 minutes left on the clock.

The lead was doubled six minutes later when Mane turned provider by getting to the byline before sending a ball into the six-yard area where Idrissa Gueye fired into an empty net.

Kamou Malo's charges pulled a goal back in the 82nd minute to set up a nervy finish when an unmarked Blati Touré raced into the box turn home Issa Kabore's cross at the near post.

However, Senegal ended any hopes of a Stallions come back five minutes later when Mane caught the defence on the counter before lobbing the on-rushing Ouédraogo to seal his side's spot in Sunday's final.
