Cameroon Advance To Last 16, Burkina Faso Get First Win

Cameroon 4-1 Ethiopia

Cameroon became the first side to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations Last 16 after thrashing Ethiopia 4-1 on Thursday evening.

The Indomitable Lions made three changes to the side that edged Burkina Faso 2-1 in the opener, as Bayern Munich forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was recalled, alongside Jean-Charles Castelletto and Martin Hongla.

The Walia Ibex had a dream start after Dewa Hotessa opened the scoring in fourth minute with a strike into the bottom corner after a cross by Amanuel Gebremichael found him unmarked inside the box.

However, Ethiopia's lead was short-lived, as Olympique Lyonnais forward Karl Toko Ekambi levelled matters for Cameroon four minutes later with a close-range header after a cross by Collins Fai.

Patrice Beaumelle's charges were threatening to go ahead, as Nicolas Ngamaleu had a goal ruled out for offside in the 32nd minute and Toko Ekambi came close just before the half-time break with a header that came off the bottom post.

Cameroon eventually took the lead eight minutes after the halftime break after former FC Porto striker Vincent Aboubakar bagged his third goal of the campaign by powering home a header from Fai's cross.

Aboubakar opened the floodgates for the hosts as he made it 3-1 two minutes later and grabbed his brace with a strike in the box after he was setup by Ngamaleu.

Toko Ekambi put the game to bed for the Indomitable Lions with his second goal 23 minutes before time with a piece of individual brilliance to get inside the box and fire a strike into the bottom corner.

Cape Verde 0-1 Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso registered their first win in Group A after edging Cape Verde 1-0 on Thursday evening.

The Stallions were without captain and Aston Villa midfielder Bertrand Traore, who was replaced by Hassane Bande in attack while Cape Verde's front-line was led by former Dijon striker Julio Tavares.

Burkina Faso were on the front foot in the opening exchanges and they had a penalty appeal in the 15th minute after Issa Kabore went down under a challenge in the box but the referee did not consult the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The Stallions eventually broke the deadlock just before the half-time break after Bande was at the right place at the right time to convert a cross by Kabore from close-range.

The Blue Sharks came to life in the second stanza, as Garry Rodrigues had a chance to equalise in the 63rd minute after going through in the box but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Herve Koffi.

Burkina Faso made a double change just after that, crowding the midfield with the introduction of Ismahila Ouedraogo and Zakaria Sanogo, who both replaced Gustavo Sangare and striker Abdoul Tapsoba.

The Stallions were weathering the storm in the closing stages, searching for chances on counter-attacks and eventually held on to get their campaign up and running with their first win, equal on points with Cape Verde in Group A.
