Marco Asensio: Why I Snubbed Barcelona
Spain international Marco Asensio has revealed why he snubbed FC Barcelona for Real Madrid.
The 21-year-old, who has risen to stardom over the past year with Los Blancos, reportedly turned down a move to rivals Blaugrana before signing for Real in 2015.
Asensio has now revealed that, despite Barca's interest, he could only see himself playing for Los Blancos once he heard of their interest.
"I made my first team debut with Mallorca, then Barca came on to the scene," he told Spanish radio show El Partidazo de COPE.
"At the end of the day, it's destiny. It didn't happen with Barca, and I'm thrilled to be with Real Madrid and to defend their shirt.
"It was a difficult few days. When Horacio (Gaggioli, Asensio's agent) called me and told me that Real Madrid were interested in me, I said I only wanted to play there."
The Spaniard also spoke about Neymar's exit from the Camp Nou.
"We thought it was a bit strange that Neymar would leave Barcelona," he added.
"He was a very important player for them and that they couldn't hang on to him was odd, but these things happen."
Asensio has played 44 games for Los Blancos since joining them, scoring 14 goals and assisting a further four strikes along the way.
