Real Suffer Shock Loss At Wolfsburg

UEFA Champions League

Result: Wolfsburg 2-0 Real Madrid

Date: 06 April 2016

Venue: Wolfsburg Arena

Real Madrid were left stunned, as they suffered a 2-0 loss to Wolfsburg in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie.

Los Blancos got off to the better start, but it was the host who broke the deadlock, as Ricardo Rodriguez converted a penalty in the 18th minute, after Andre Schurrle was brought down by Casemiro.

Wolfsburg doubled their lead in the 25th minute, as Maximilian Arnold turned home Henrique's cross with a neat finish at the near post, 2-0.

Real were presented with a chance to level matters in the 33rd when Gareth Bale picked out Karim Benzema in the box, however the Frenchman's header sailed wide of the upright.

Zinedine Zidane suffered a blow just before the halftime break, as Benzema picked up a knock and was forced off. He was replaced by James Rodriguez.

Cristiano Ronaldo was enduring a frustrating evening and the frustration continued in the second half, as he failed to connect with Gareth Bale's inviting cross in the box shortly after the break.

The Portuguese superstar squandered another chance in the 57th minute, as he skied his effort over the crossbar from close range, after some good work by Bale and Toni Kroos.

Zidane's charges continued to push for goals but were left frustrated in the 73rd minute, as Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio produced a fine save to keep out Ronaldo's close range effort.

Despite the late pressure from Los Blancos, the Bundesliga managed to hold out till the final whistle to claim the impressive win heading into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.
