Who Is Chiefs' Target, Ivan Bukenya?

There appears to be a good possibility that Kaizer Chiefs may opt to sign central defender, Ivan Bukenya.

The Siya crew first linked the Ugandan defender with a move to Naturena over a month ago, before the club officially confirmed their interest in the player.

Chiefs have made it clear they want to strengthen the squad ahead of their CAF Champions League commitments in the new year.

However, Knowledge Musona has been the only major signing, leading to speculation that Bukenya could be snapped up.

Chiefs’ fans would perhaps have every right to wonder just what kind of player Bukenya really is. The Siya crew did a little digging to find out more about the defender.

Having been linked to the Amakhosi, the 21-year-old told Ugandan news website, Redpepper, that joining a big club like Chiefs could only improve his game.

He said, “I know it will improve my football career if I am lucky to join the team.”

The player started his career as a promising youth product at Proline Soccer Academy in Uganda. His potential prompted Ethiopian giants, St Georges Football Club, to pay a fee said to be $70 000 (R730 000) for his and another unnamed player’s services.

He later moved to then Iraqi champions Erbil in 2011, where he played regularly and scored some vital goals.

The 6 ft 3 defender recently earned his first call-up to the Uganda national squad, in a 3-0 defeat to Libya.

Bukenya could appear to have a mature head on his shoulders, as he is said to have completed his Bachelor’s degree in Logistics and Management from Nkumba University.

The Ugandan international is said to be able read the game well and has good composure on the ball, to add to his physical attributes.

If a deal does happen, Bukenya would be following in the footsteps of fellow countryman, David Obua, who enjoyed three successful seasons with Chiefs.
