Bidvest Wits dethroned Mamelodi Sundowns of their Absa Premiership title this week and Soccer Laduma takes a look at the four key moments where the Masandawana's title hopes were dented.
Here are four encounters where Sundowns lost out on crucial points:
14/02/2017: Chippa United 1-1 Sundowns
Sundowns were leading 1-0 in this encounter after Wayne Arendse fired his shot into the back of the Chilli Boys’ net in the 19th minute.
However, Chippa came back to level the score before the half-time whistle after conceding a penalty to the Chilli boys which saw Rhulani Manzini firing home in the 37th minute.
01/04/2017: Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 Sundowns
The Brazilians took the lead in the 26th minute with a goal from Khama Billiat, however, this was quickly followed up by Bernard Parker’s equaliser in the 34th minute.
The two sides were locked at 1-1 right until the final fifteen minutes of the encounter until Bangaly Soumahoro handed Chiefs the winner by playing the ball into his own net.
10/05/2017: Sundowns 2-2 Baroka FC
Masandawana let their 2-0 lead slip after Baroka were able to come from behind to make it 2-1 and paid dearly in added-time after Thapelo Morena was cautioned for a handball in the box with Richard Matloga subsequently converting the penalty to make the score 2-2 at full-time.
Head Coach Pitso Mosimane’s side was denied the top spot on the Absa Premiership league standings, as Bidvest Wits suffered a 3-1 loss to Free State Stars on the same day.
17/05/2017: Sundowns 2-2 Maritzburg United
The Chloorkop-based club could have taken the title race right down to the wire if they were able to collect all three points in this encounter, however, this result on the night, saw Bidvest Wits being crowned Absa Premiership champions in their penultimate fixture.
