After a string of losses the win came as great relief to coach Steve Komphela, while Boebie Solomons saw his team lose their first game since he took charge.
Ea Lla Koto certainly didn't have things all go their way, and City had a number of chances to score that were either saved by Agyei, or missed from a lack of composure infront of goal
Free State Stars had the first shot in anger in the 7th minute when Abdul-Basit Adam tried a shot from the right hand side of the box, but Modiro Marumo saved.
A minute later and Morumo was called back into action, this time from a Danny Venter shot from the edge of the area, but Morumo was able to tip it over.
Polokwane were looking enterprising at times, and had their first shot on target in the 13th minute through Puleng Tlolane, but Daniel Agyei wasn't tested as it went straight to him.
In the 20th minute Luyolo Nomandela tried a shot from the edge of the area, but a diving Marumo was able to save his shot.
Five minutes later Nomandela had another effort, but this time it was off target and went wide.
Mothusi Gopane tried a shot for City in the 26th minute, but his attempt from the left of goal went straight at Agyei.
In the 42nd minute Paulos Masehe tried to give Stars the lead, but his shot sailed wide, and a fairly even first half ended goalless.
The second-half saw Ea Lla Koto attempt to take control of the match but City remained composed, and tried to counter-attack when possible.
In the 63rd minute Polokwane came close when Esau Kanyenda got to the end of a good cross from Tshepo Molala, but with just the keeper to beat, his touch let him down, and the ball went wide.
Kanyenda had another chance for City ten minutes later, but this time he couldn't shoot on target, as the Free State Stars defence surrounded him.
Stars substitute Mthokozisi Yende shot grabbed a 1-0 lead for the home side, when his shot was deflected by Tshepo Molala into the net, leaving Marumo stranded.
It was eventually given as an own goal to Molala.
A minute later Galabgwe Moyana tried to find a quick equalizer but his long range attempt went just over.
City came close in stoppage time to grabbing the equalizer but Thapelo Tshilo's header was well saved by Agyei, and Free State Stars held on.
