Stars Crowned MTN8 Champions

MTN8 Final

Result: Pirates 1-1 (1-3 pen) P Stars

Date: 28 September 2013

Venue: Moses Mabhida Stadium

Platinum Stars were crowned 2013 MTN8 champions after they beat Orlando Pirates 3-1 in a penalty shootout at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. The game ended 1-1 after extra-time.

The game started at a snail-pace, though Dikwena did manage to create one decent early chance. A fourth minute free-kick was whipped into the near post by Patrick Malokase but was dealt with before Rooi Mahamutsa got stuck in to deflect a shot off target moments later.

The next real opportunity came in the 21st minute with Kermit Erasmus deciding to let fly from far out and his dipping shot was caught by Siyabonga Mpontshane at the second attempt.

The former SuperSport United man was trying to bring the game to life and three minutes later Erasmus turned his defender before turning on the pace but his finish was deflected off target.

Daine Klate then produced a sublime turn to beat his defender in the 30th minute before sliding a pass to Erasmus who cut inside but powered his finish over when he should have gone for placement.

Happy Jele lashed a shot wide in the 38th minute before the Sea Robbers suffered a blow with Patrick Phungwayo coming off injured with Thabo Matlaba replacing him.

Oupa Manyisa tested the goalkeeper with a powerful low strike in the 41st minute while Mahamutsa couldn't get enough on his header from a corner moments before the half-time whistle.

The breakthrough finally arrived after the break and it came from Stars as Robert Ng'ambi powered his header past a helpless Meyiwa after Benson Mhlongo had flicked the ball on.

Jele then sent a header miles over after a brilliant run from Matlaba in the 50th minute before Erasmus saw his neat finish ruled out for offside. Though replays suggested that the attacker was in line with the last defender.

Molangoane decided to hit the turf in search of a penalty four minutes after replacing Segolela but the referee waved his appeal away.

Mogakolodi Ngele tested Meyiwa with a free-kick but Pirates would ensure that the game went to extra-time as Matlaba produced another stunning strike from range which rattled the back of the net before the goalkeeper could react.

The game opened slightly as legs began to tire in extra-time and arguably the best chance came to Erasmus who was picked out by a powerful low cross from Matlaba but somehow he sent it wide from close range.

Penalties were needed and Pirates produced some horrible spot-kicks in the rain with Lennox Bacela, Ndumiso Mabena and Rooi Mahamutsa all missing the target as Stars claimed the crown.

Pirates: Senzo Meyiwa, Rooi Mahamutsa, Happy Jele, Patrick Phungwayo, Siyabonga Sangweni, Lehlogonolo Masalesa, Oupa Manyisa, Daine Klate, Tlou Segolela, Kermit Erasmus, Lennox Bacela.

P Stars: Siyabonga Mpontshane, Elias Ngwepe, Vuyo Mere, Tshepo Gumede, Benson Mhlongo, Robert Ng'ambi, Patrick Malokase, Issa Sarr, Tintswalo Tshabalala, Siphelele Mthembu, Sibusiso Msomi.
