The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed to the Siya crew that a Premier Soccer League player has been arrested for allegedly stabbing someone with a knife.
In our investigation, the Siya crew has gathered that the player in question belongs to Free State Stars.
The player, whose identity is known to the Siya crew, was arrested on Wednesday (yesterday). He has been arrested regarding an incident that happened before one of the games for Ea Lla Koto, prior to the end of last season.
Police spokesperson in Bethlehem Capt. Zweli Mohobeleli confirmed that the player has been charged with attempted murder and is due to appear in court on Friday.
“A 22-year-old man was arrested yesterday for an attempted murder incident which occurred on 15 May 2016. He will appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate Court tomorrow (Friday),” said Mohobeleli.
Siya sources in Bethlehem area have confirmed that the accused was in the company of three of his teammates at the time, outside one of the local nightclubs on the night of the incident.
One of the other players is believed to have allegedly also played a role in the stabbing of a young man, and has since joined one a club in Gauteng.
“One of the players from Free State Stars has been arrested. He was arrested yesterday morning. He and his teammates allegedly stabbed some guy in Bethlehem. They (the players) were a group of four guys. The whole thing started with an argument about a girlfriend in one of the nightclubs in Bethlehem. The girlfriend belonged to one of the players. It turned out that on the night of the incident she went to the nightclub with some other guy and not the player. The soccer player wasn’t happy with that and he called his teammates and they allegedly attacked the guy. It was not a good incident to see. If you can see pictures of the guy who was stabbed you would cry. He had his intestines coming out of the stomach. They stabbed him multiple times all over his body. The incident happened after their (Stars’) game against (Orlando) Pirates (in May). There are people who have been trying to hide the incident and that’s why it has taken long to come out. But it has come out now because of the pressure from the community,” a source told the Siya crew.
The Siya crew has gathered that attempts are underway for the player in question to get application for bail.
Called for comment, the club's management were not willing to make statements until they have further information on the matter.
