Could Shakes Take Charge Of Pirates?
Orlando Pirates Coach Announcement Imminent
Orlando Pirates could turn to their former player and team manager, Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba, in their search for a coach to take charge of the team for the remainder of the 2016/17 season.
Pirates are expected to announce a new coach on Monday next week, as confirmed by the club’s chairman Irvin Khoza at a press conference.
There is a strong rumour in the football fraternity that Mashaba could be the man to take charge of Bucs. Under interim coach Augusto Palacios, the results have not been forthcoming for the Buccaneers.
It is believed that Mashaba is seen as a short-term replacement for Palacios, with an indication that the former SA U20 coach could see out the season with Bucs.
Khoza has already confirmed that Pirates’ preferred candidate for the team’s coaching job is currently contracted to another club and unavailable.
As reported by the Siya crew, highly-rated Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach Herve Renard is the man Pirates have identified as their potential full-time coach, according to sources.
However, Renard is currently the head coach of the Morocco national team. While there has been no official word from Bucs regarding the Mashaba link with the club, indications are that he is being considered.
Mashaba is currently involved in a legal battle with his former employers, the South African Football Association, regarding his removal from the Bafana Bafana coaching position.
Regarding the Pirates coaching role, there has also been mention of a few other candidates, including Luc Eymael, Milutin Sredojevic and an unknown foreign-based coach - among others.
There is talk that Mzansi football legend, Benni McCarthy, is also being considered for an unspecified technical team role other than that of the head coach.
Former Free State Stars coach Giovanni Solinas, Ruud Krol and Nigerian football legend Samson Siasia have all been linked with Bucs in recent weeks.
