Obviously We Used African Tricks

In this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma,  FC Cape Town’s Amajita goalkeeper, Sibongiseni Mkhize , who is loan from SuperSport United talks passionately to  Soccer Laduma’s Peter Raath why he joined the club.

He also discusses Belarus players, teammates and the team’s next challenge - with the NFD Focus brought to you by BUCO.

Following Amajita’s successful Commonwealth Cup triumph in Russia, Mkhize expressed the excitement and the hard work they put in prior to tournament saying, ” I’m feeling great! I am excited about the fact that an African country won an international tournament like this one. Prior to the start of the game, even though it was snowing, we went to touch a statue called ‘Golden Luck’ so I think that’s where our luck came from.

“To be honest, Finland played the same formation as us. They were patient so it was a bit difficult to break them down, but we finally managed to capitalize on their tiredness. Using the 4-4-2 style of play with a diamond formation in the middle, where you couldn’t see who our wingers were, really worked for us."

Mkhize further lauded his teammates for stepping up when it mattered most.

“The two best players were our captain, Motjeka Madisha, and Maraisane, who also scored our only goal when we lost 3-1 to Qatar in a friendly before travelling to Russia. We were very sad with that result. We were a bit sluggish as we were still getting used to the coach’s formation, but we didn’t look down. We kept our heads up and after that responded very well.

“As Africans, after winning the cup, we couldn’t stop singing and cherishing God in the change room, thanking Him for what He did for us, “ Mkhize added.

The FC Cape Town shot-stopper also touched on how he advised Dumisani Msibi during the semi-finals against Belarus when the game headed to spot kicks after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

“I wasn’t sad to be on the bench for Dumisani Msibi. He really played very well, especially to save two penalties against Belarus after that match ended 1-1. Since it was his first international tournament, I did warn him about the European mentality of scoring all their penalties.

“I made him aware of what happened at the 2011 Manchester United Premier Cup World Finals where I saved spot kicks for Orlando Pirates’ juniors in both the quarter and semi-finals. He listened to me and we were victorious, “ he concluded.
