In our new weekly feature where you, the reader, can ask the selected journalist questions, our in-house Kaizer Chiefs, Maritzburg United and Wits specialist, David Minchella, gets back to you.
The questions were submitted to Minchella from our readers, getting an insight into life as a journo and some of the PSL teams. Random questions were selected, with our specialist sharing his thoughts.
Minchella answered some of the readers:
What he (Dave) was doing before he became a Soccer-Laduma journo? Submitted by: Simphiwe10
"Hi Simphiwe, I tried everything I could to make it as a footballer. My dream was to conquer the odds and to play in the PSL. I tried to find ways to make myself a better player. I studied the science of movement and how it relates to the game. I tried to make myself stronger, faster and fitter by researching the leading training techniques, and then applying them to my training."
"I followed the correct diet and studied techniques to increase my mental strength. I never did crack it and the National First Division (then the coastal league) was my Everest. One of my favourite memories is giving a Man-of the-Match display against Ajax Cape Town in a pre-season friendly. I’m proud of that and I’m even prouder to be writing for Soccer-Laduma today."
David, I hear you specialise with Chiefs, Maritzburg United and Wits. Why does it seem that you focus on Chiefs more than the other teams? Submitted by: NELLY078
"Good question, Nelly078. We do focus on Chiefs a little bit more because they are one of the biggest clubs in the country, and they boast such a huge following. However, we are equally as committed to making sure we give coverage to the so-called smaller teams."
"One of the most fulfilling pieces I did recently was a simply-themed Maritzburg article entitled, ‘Can Yakubu replace Malajila?’ Every day I try to find ways to celebrate the so-called smaller teams because I love the underdog spirit. It’s perhaps because in my playing career I was always an underdog myself, and nobody gave me a chance."
Dave, do you think Chiefs will be able to defend their titles this season given that they haven’t signed many players? Submitted by: Van08
"Yes, I do. If, and this is important, they don’t lose key players to injury or suspension. Before any Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns supporters perhaps accuse me of being a closet Chiefs fan, I’d like to set the record straight – I’m not! I’m just doing the job the good people of Soccer-Laduma assigned to me."
"Look, I’m surprised about their link with another central defender - Read: Chiefs Confirm Bukenya Interest. I thought with Tefu Mashamaite, Morgan Gould and Eric Mathoho they had more than enough at the back. My major concern would be if Reneilwe Letsholonyane or Willard Katsande got injured – I’m not sure there’s enough cover in this key area of the park."
"That’s why I say though, if Chiefs can keep their core group of players that won them the double fit, I see no reason why they can’t win it all again."
Yours in football,
