Mashego Brace Sends Sundowns Back On Top

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Moroka Swallows 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in a top of the table ABSA Premiership clash at Loftus Stadium, thanks to a brace from striker Katlego Mashego.

The win takes Sundowns back to the top of the log on 23 points, after having played ten games.

Mashego scored a goal in each half, while Lerato Chabangu scored Swallow's only goal.

In the fifth minute Tebogo Langerman whipped in a cross towards Cuthbert Malajila, but the Zimbabwean striker's touch went high and wide.

In the 14th minute Lerato Chabangu tried a shot from a free kick, but the ball was easily gathered by Kennedy Mweene.

Chabangu had another chance for Swallows from a free kick in the 18th minute, but his attempt went over Mweene's goal.

In the 24th minute Maljila had another chance when Khama Billiat headed the ball into his his path, but Malajila's shot from just inside the box was well blocked.

Two minutes later Dikgang Mabalane tried a long range effort, but his first-time shot sailed wide and high.

In the 31st minute Larry Cohen's attempted header from a Chabangu corner, just went wide to the right.

A minute later Chabangu broke free and tried an effort from outside the box, but it straight at Mweene.

In the 32nd minute, Bhilliat sent in a good ball into the box for Malajila to run on to, but he shot just wide.

In the 35th minute Siyabonga Nomvethe looked to break free as he broke the last line of defence, but Mweene rushed out of his area to make the tackle. Nomvethe took a knock during the challenge from Mweene's elbow and there was a break in play as he received treatment.

Sundowns had a great chance in the 42nd minute, but Jabulani Shongwe's attempt from inside the box was well blocked by Cohen.

Sundowns went into the lead seconds later through Katlego Mashego, as they took advantage of a bad pass by goalkeeper Greg Etafia. 

Sundowns robbed the defence of the ball, and Billiat played in Mashego who scored into an open goal.

Just before half-time Bryce Moon crossed to Billiat, who forced Etafia to make a save and it remained 1-0 at half-time

A patched-up Nomvethe came close to equalizing for Swallows in the 50th minute, but his header from a Chabangu free kick went straight into Mweene's hands.

Five minutes later Nomvethe had another chance, this time from a Chabangu corner, but his header went over the goal.

Mashego got his brace in the 60th minute to make it 2-0, as headed in on the rebound after Rashid Sumaila's original header from a corner hit the crossbar.

Two minutes later Teko Modise had a chance for Sundowns, but his shot from the right went into the side-netting.

Luvhengo Mungomeni got his his second yellow card in the 70th minute when he fouled Billiat and Swallows were reduced to ten men.

Mashego came close to getting his hat-trick in the 81st minute, as Malajila broke down the left and tried a play a square ball toward him, but Etafia was able to intercept and save.

In the 86th minute Mashego had another chance as he climbed well to head at Hlompho Kekana's cross, but it struck the crossbar and bounced back into play.

Chabangu made it 2-1 in the 88th minute from a set piece, as he struck a beautiful free kick into the top right corner.
