Former Orlando Pirates club legend, Lucky Lekgwathi thinks that Benni McCarthy should be given a chance to lead the Buccaneers back to glory.
McCarthy has caused quite a stir amongst the football fraternity and especially amongst the faithful Pirates supporters, after fans have been singing his name to be the new head coach at the Soweto giants.
The 39-year-old has since confirmed to the Siya crew that he is yet to be approached by the club’s chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza for his services.
However, Lekgwathi, believes that McCarthy’s qualities and experience as a former player, has proven that he is capable of being a leader, and given the chance, will be able to do well for the Soweto giants.
“You know what, for me, yes, yes. I think with his qualities, yes. I know the people will say no he doesn’t have the experience to coach, whatever. For me, with his experience, yes. I worked with Benni, he is a leader and again, he is the coach,” the former Pirates captain told the Siya crew.
“He used to play a big role to the coaches that have coached us, Palacios can tell you. He is a leader, he is the coach, I worked with him at Bafana Bafana, where he used to help the coach, even at Pirates, he used to help the coach with the team, not about the line-up, but about analyzing the games. He knows how to analyze the game, so I think for me he can be the right man,” he added.
Lekgwathi also thinks that Pirates’ interim coach, Augusto Palacios could serve as a good mentor to McCarthy, if he was given the head coach role.
“I think there are people that he must be around. Actually, coach Palacios, I think Benni will learn too many things from him. As you know, he worked with Benni for many years. If they give Benni that post, Palacios should be next to Benni, even if Palacios isn’t the coach, he must be next to Benni as his mentor.”
“Give him a chance, I think with his experience, Pirates can do well. Everyone respects Benni, even my former teammates, all of them respect Benni, even me. I used to respect the guy even though I was the captain.”
