The industrious midfielder tragically passed away in a car accident in the early hours of 17 January. In a match against Orlando Pirates the night before, he was on target as the Team of Choice held the Buccaneers to a pulsating 3-3 draw.
In his extended Revovling Column in Soccer Laduma's issue 974, the Mitchell's Plain-born attacker opened up about what the win meant for the entire Maritzburg family, and more especially for Cele who they lost when things were falling in place in his football career.
“The loss of Mondli Cele was part of a very emotional season overall for Maritzburg United. He lost his life just when he was picking up form and scoring goals for us. Losing him saw us losing our momentum as a team too. This great relegation escape is a dedication to Mondli Cele.
“At the end of the game against Jomo Cosmos I felt him looking down on us with a smile from the heavens saying he is proud of us. May his soul rest in peace," the midfielder explained.
Cele had made eight appearances for Maritzburg before his untimely death.
