Kaizer Chiefs’ decision to let go of Tefu Mashamaite, Mandla Masango, Matthew Rusike and Katlego Mphela saw them lose around R27m-worth of players for free.
According to German website, Transfermarkt.com, the four aforementioned players were worth upwards of R27m at the time of their departure from Naturena, however were all allowed to leave for nothing as their contracts at the club expired.
Mashamaite left for BK Hacken, Masango joined Randers in Sweden, and Rusike left for Halmstad before joining Helsingborg earlier this year.
Given that Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Morgan Gould – who are both worth around R5.8m – will become free agents at the end of the season, and with Erick Mathoho (R13m) and Willard Katsande (R9.2m) entering into the last year of their deals, the Amakhosi will be eager to make sure that that doesn’t happen again.
The club did move quickly to extend the contracts of Tsepo Masilela, Bernard Parker and Siboniso Gaxa last year, and they will be keen to tie down the most valuable of their remaining assets in the not-so-distant future.
