Chiefs’ Worst Start In Six Years

Following the 3-1 Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates at the weekend, Kaizer Chiefs are now having their worst start to an Absa Premiership campaign for six years.

The Amakhosi currently find themselves in sixth place with 14 points on the Absa Premiership log after nine games, four points off league leaders, Platinum Stars, and could potentially drop further behind if Dikwena and Bidvest Wits win their games in hand.

It was always thought that Steve Komphela had a tough job on his hands coming in to replace Stuart Baxter, who won two league titles, as well as one Nedbank Cup and one MTN8 trophy in his three years at Naturena, something that has proven to be true.

Having lost out to Ajax Cape Town in the MTN8 final, Chiefs have won just three of their nine league games so far, and lost their unbeaten record to their bitter rivals at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

That point tally after nine games is Chiefs’ worst return at the start of a season since Vladimir Vermezovic took over in 2009 when they picked up 13 points from their opening nine.

The club did start badly in Baxter’s second season, grabbing 15 points from nine games and losing two of their first eight games, however they then went on to win nine games in a row.

Chiefs After Nine Games:
2014/15 - 25 points
2013/14 – 15 points
2012/13 - 21 points
2011/12 - 19 points
2010/11 - 17 points
2009/10 - 13 points

The Glamour Boys face Golden Arrows tonight, a team that has already beaten Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United this season, knowing that they need to hit a real run of form soon if they are to challenge for the league title.
