Reigning Absa Premiership champions, Kaizer Chiefs, could well be officially dethroned this weekend if results go against them on Saturday.
The Amakhosi have not had a good season in 2015/16, losing two cup finals in the early stages of the season before dropping off the pace in the league at the start of 2016.
Now, with 15 points separating the Glamour Boys from the league leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns, they are on the verge of being mathematically out of the title race.
As things stand, the maximum points tally that Steve Komphela’s side can achieve if they win all of their remaining six games is 58 points, and Pitso Mosimane’s side could hit that total with a win over Jomo Cosmos on Saturday.
If Sundowns do beat Cosmos, should Chiefs – who are on a seven-game winless run – fail to beat Ajax Cape Town, then they will see their – already slim – title chances go up in smoke.
Meanwhile, Mpumalanga Black Aces will drop out of the race tonight if they cannot beat Maritzburg United, and this weekend could end with just Sundowns, Bidvest Wits and Platinum Stars in with a mathematical chance of lifting the title.
