Baxter Is Baffled

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter admits he is baffled following his side’s first loss in the Absa Premiership on Tuesday night.

Goals from Jeremy Brockie and Dove Wome handed SuperSport a 2-0 win over the Amakhosi, but Baxter says he doesn’t understand how his side lost.

“Directly after the game I am thinking that I don’t know how we lost the game,” said Baxter.

“I thought that we have never dominated a first half against SuperSport, that completely, as we did tonight.

“The big chances we didn’t get in the first half. I thought we had good situations, but not the chances.

“The second half we opened up by conceding a very poor goal for us – we have three big centre-backs and a 50-yard ball into our six-yard box, we have a big goalkeeper and three big centre-backs and they (SuperSport) get the header in – that is very disappointing.

“I think we were on the back foot for ten minutes (in the second half), but then we took over the game again and we had to really go for it.

“We ended up with a lot of attacking players on the field and we created so many chances to equalise without really threatening to take one of them, and then obviously we got hit by a sucker-punch at the finish, but we had to go for it, 1-0, 2-0, it doesn’t really matter.”

Baxter only played three defenders in the match and he explained his thinking regarding the number of attacking players he had on the field.

“We had Mandla (Masango) as a right wing-back and at the finish we had George Lebese as a left-wing back, those are both wingers. We had David Zulu and Bernard Parker as two strikers through the middle and we had Shabba (Siphiwe Tshabalala) playing just behind them, so we were taking a massive gamble,” added the Amakhosi tactician.

“We did create those chances and what you hope is that you score one and then push on for a winner, but sometimes the story doesn’t end the way you want it.”

In conclusion, Baxter said he was happy with his side’s overall performance against SuperSport despite losing their first league game of the season.

“I am actually more pleased with this performance tonight than the CAF performance (on the weekend in the Champions League) or the one in Bloemfontein (in the league against Celtic),”said Baxter.

“I think we created and played with more quality tonight.

“What worries me is that we played that well and we didn’t win the game, that worries me, that is a tendency we have to break.”
