Ex-Chiefs Sports Scientist Teams Up With Bafana
Josh Smith Has Been Asked To Help Bafana
Josh Smith, the former Head of Sports Science at Kaizer Chiefs, has been asked to help Thabo Senong with the Bafana Bafana side that will play in the CHAN qualifiers.
Bafana take on Angola over the course of two legs later this month, and with the games not falling on FIFA dates, Shakes Mashaba has been forced to select fringe players that will actually be available.
However, with Mashaba currently away in South America for international friendlies against Costa Rica and Honduras, his assistant, Senong, will be looking after the CHAN players until his return, and has called upon Smith to help him.
Smith, who left Chiefs with Stuart Baxter to join Genclerbirligi, left Turkey at the same time as the former Amakhosi coach when he exited the club in August.
Now, having agreed to join up with the national team, Smith says that it’s an honour for him, and that he’s looking forward to seeing some of his former Amakhosi colleagues.
He told the Siya crew, “For me, as with any sports professional. coach or player, it's an amazing honour to have been asked to contribute to the national team setup. I've had a few weeks off and I'm buzzing to get back on the pitch and work with the boys.
“I had a close relationship with the players when working at Chiefs and remain in contact with a few of them still. It will be good to see the guys and catch up on things.”
Smith, alongside the Chiefs medical team, was highly praised by Baxter, and played a big role in making sure that the club had the impressive player availability rate that they had.
