Paez Targets 10 Goals After Disappointing Chiefs Campaign
Kaizer Chiefs striker, Gustavo Paez, is targeting at least 10 goals for the 2017/18 Absa Premiership season, admitting that his first campaign has been a disappointment.
The Venezuelan ended the season with a goal against Bidvest Wits on Saturday, taking his tally to five following his move to Naturena earlier this year, although they still had to watch the Clever Boys lift the trophy at FNB Stadium after the final whistle.
Speaking after the game, the 27-year-old told Chiefs’ official website, “I didn’t like it that another team comes to our house be celebrated as the champions… That was very difficult for me. However, we are a big team and that’s why it’s important that we beat Wits.”
“I was happy with the confidence the coach showed in me to have me start against Wits. I held up my run into the box, waiting like a baby. Then, when the pass came, I pounced on the ball and slotted it past the Wits goalkeeper.”
Meanwhile, regarding the 2017/18 campaign, he said, “Next season I want to score at least ten goals. I think that’s a realistic target, considering I scored five times in half a season.
“I am disappointed that we couldn’t win a trophy this season but we definitely plan to win trophies next season. We had eleven draws. That’s too much. We should turn these draws into more wins. We have done well at home this season, not losing a single game, but we need to be more effective when playing away.”
Paez will now have his eyes set on enjoying a full preseason at Naturena for the first time and getting off to a good start when the league resumes in a few months’ time.
