Steve Komphela has explained why George Lebese was missing for Kaizer Chiefs prior to his game-winning return against Chippa United this weekend.

The 28-year-old was missing for the Amakhosi’s clashes with Acornbush United and Bloemfontein Celtic this month, sprouting rumours that he had fallen out of favour under Steve Komphela, however his head coach says that that was not the reason.
Lebese, who has been battling injury, had a huge impact on the game on Saturday as he came off the bench to score the winner, and Komphela says that he had a feeling that he would do so, and made sure that he celebrated with the attacker.
He told Chiefs’ official website, “We made a few changes, including bringing on George Lebese and it worked… With Edmore having worked hard in the first half, we thought that Lebese with his finesse will give us something different. And, I remember telling the bench that George will score for us tonight and that’s exactly what happened.
“George had a niggling pain in his ankle and we wanted it to settle and be treated adequately. I hope he will remain injury free for the rest of the season.”
Meanwhile, with Chiefs now 14 games unbeaten in all competitions and still in contention for the Absa Premiership title, Komphela is optimistic.
He said, “Any point counts at the stage. We played a good side that can hurt you if you aren’t careful. They don’t threaten often, but they have this ability to score at any point of the game if you aren’t careful.
“We had to grind out a result and I’m happy with the three points. The game was a spectacle for the supporters.”
The Kaizer Chiefs coach brought on George Lebese for Edmore Chirambadare at the start of the second half.
Komphela also touched on Gustavo Paez’s performance as he came in for the suspended Bernard Parker, and whether he would keep his place, saying, “Páez gave us everything we were looking for. I thought that he would get tired, but he played well until the end of the match.
“We will sort out the return of Parker when we get there next week.”
