Chiefs: To Buy Or To Nurture?

In the current Kaizer Chiefs squad there are just a handful of players that came through the club’s academy. Should there be more?

Itumeleng Khune, Lorenzo Gordinho and Lucky Baloyi are the only players registered by the Amakhosi this season that spent time coming through the club’s development structures, however it seems that Chiefs are eager to change that.

Chiefs recently brought in Swedish coach Bo Augustsson to help run the youth structures at the club and they are currently in the process of building a full youth complex at Naturena Village.

Speaking to Chiefs’ official website, their football manager, Bobby Motaung said, “We are investing heavily in this project. We are putting together a solid infrastructure to support our ambition to grow our own players. The evolution of football economy requires us to develop our own talent.

“We are not only investing in players, we are also strengthening the technical team with a team of physios, sports scientists and dieticians. We have brought in a Technical Director, Bo Augustsson from Sweden to oversee and guide the process. Mr. Augustsson is busy adapting to the conditions in SA and we hope that he will add value to the project. We already see progress sooner than we expected.”

In recent years Chiefs, just like several other clubs in the PSL, have opted to buy in talented footballers rather than breed them themselves, but that could now be something that changes in the future.

Do you agree with always signing talent? Or should some be home-grown?
