Chiefs Go Eight Clear

Absa Premiership

Full Time: Mamelodi Sundowns 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 23 January 2014

Venue: Loftus Versveld Stadium

Kaizer Chiefs went eight points clear at the top of the Absa Premiership after an own goal from Wayne Arendse handed them a 1-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in a league match at Loftus Stadium on Thursday night.

It was a blistering start to the game as both sides pushed forward in attack.

Sundowns came close to opening the scoring as early as the third minute when a thunderous 30-yard shot from Teko Modise struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced away from danger with the keeper well-beat.

Chiefs, however, were not to be outdone and created their first chance on goal in the fifth minute as Morgan Gould met a left sided free-kick from Bernard Parker, but his timid volley from 14-yards out was easily saved by Kennedy Mweene.

Three minutes later and Khama Billiat showed some great individual skill, holding off three defenders before unleashing a powerful shot from the left edge of the 18-yard box, but Itumeleng Khune produced a good save to deny him.

In the tenth minute Chiefs took the lead when Wayne Arendse turned the ball into his own net as he attempted to clear a left sided free-kick whipped into the box by Parker, 1-0.

Sundowns tried to hit back quickly and Katlego Mashego came close seven minutes after going behind as he drove into the box on the left, but saw his 14-yard shot from an acute angle brilliantly saved by the feet of Khune.

Chiefs, though, were not going to sit back and came within inches of doubling their lead in the 25th minute as Parker drove into the right side of the box, but fired his 16-yard shot just over the crossbar.

Sundowns dominated the possession stakes for the remainder of the half as they went in search of the equaliser, but they could not breakdown a resilient Chiefs defence as the first 45 ended 1-0 in favour of the Amakhosi.

It was a slow start to the second half as both sides struggled to create clear-cut scoring chances.

The first effort on goal in the second 45 only came in the 56th minute after a free-kick cross from Mashego on the left side of the box resulted in goalmouth scramble. Anthony Laffor was quickest to pounce on a loose ball, but he fired his shot straight at the keeper from 12-yards out.

Sundowns continued to push forward and for the large part they dominated proceedings, but they couldn’t find the right pass in the final third that would unlock the Chiefs defence.

The Brazilians did find the back of the net in the 84th minute, but the goal was disallowed due to off-sides.

The Amakhosi did not offer much in attack in the final third in the second half, but did enough to hold on for a slender 1-0 win.

The result now takes then eight points clear at the top of the table on 33 points while Sundowns and Bidvest Wits sit below them, both on 25 points.
