Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo is expected to appear in court on charges of reckless and negligent driving.
The 25-year-old, who spent the better part of the first half of the 2015/16 season on the sidelines because of an injury, was nabbed by Johannesburg Metro Police while driving around in Johannesburg on Good Friday morning, 25 April.
He was reportedly caught driving a red VW Polo at 173km/h in a 120km/h zone, and was taken to the Langlaagte Police Station and allegedly charged with reckless and negligent driving.
The Soweto-born goalkeeper was reportedly released on R1 000 bail, and is expected to appear at the Brixton Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. Johannesburg Metro Police spokesman Wayne Minnaar confirmed to the Siya crew that the driver of a red Polo was among the people arrested for speeding during the Easter weekend.
"What I can confirm is that there were people arrested for speeding over the weekend," Minnaar said.
"When the statistics are given to us, we don't get names. But I can confirm that there were 121 people arrested this long weekend for speeding.
"There was one red Polo driving at 173km/h on the N1. The driver was arrested and came to Langlaagte Police Station. That I can confirm, but I cannot say who it was."
After his arrest on Friday, Mhlongo then got married on Saturday, in what turned out to be quite an eventful weekend for the Buccaneer.
When contacted for comment, the goalkeeper told the Siya crew he was in a meeting. However, he has been quoted in the media confirming the incident, and has since apologised for his actions.
