Bafana Beat World Champions!

International Friendly

Result: South Africa 1-0 Spain

Date: 19 November 2013

Venue: FNB Stadium

Bafana Bafana beat Spain 1-0 in an International friendly at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday night, their first ever victory over the World Champions.

A second-half goal from Bernard Parker was enough for the home team to record a famous win for the home team, and not give Spain the return to FNB Stadium they wanted.

Spain controlled the early possession, especially in the opening fifteen minutes, but as time wore on Bafana Bafana began to see more of the ball.

David Villa had the ball in the back of the net in the fourth minute but the off-side flag was up and the goal was ruled out.

In the 11th minute Andres Iniesta tried a shot from the edge of the area, but his curling effort went high and wide to the right.

Pedro made a good run down the right in the 17th minute but Itumeleng Khune rushed off his line well to save at his feet.

In the 18th minute Bernard Parker laid the ball back to Oupa Manyisa, who tried from outside the area, and his shot took a deflection and bounced out off the crossbar.

Two minutes later Parker tried one from outside the box, and forced Iker Casillas to punch clear.

In the 25th minute Xabi Alonso tried a shot from the left of the box, but Bongani Khumalo did well to slide in and clear the ball.

Two minutes later Fernando Llorente had an effort, but his header sailed wide to the left.

In the 32nd minute Daylon Claasen tried a shot from outside the area, but it sailed high and wide to the right.

In the 39th minute Alonso tried from a set piece, but his low free kick went wide to the right.

In the 45th minute Alonso sent in a delicate pass for Pedro, but Khune rushed out to make a save.

At the start of the second-half Tokelo Rantie had a good chance for Bafana, after being set up well by substitute Siphiwe Tshabalala, but he shot over.

In the 54th minute Nacho Monreal tried a shot from the left of the goal, but Khune was able to save with his legs and gather the ball.

Bafana Bafana went 1-0 up as Parker chipped the ball over substitute Victor Valdes after being played in by Kamahelo Mokotjo, who in turn got the ball from a good pass from Rantie.

Andres Iniesta had two shots at goal in two minutes, the first intercepted by substitute Siyanda Xulu in the 60th minute, and then his shot two minutes later from outside the area went wide.

In the 71st minute sub Alvaro Negredo had a chance from just inside the box, but his shot went straight at Khune.

There was a bit of controversy eight minutes later, when Pepe Reina was brought on for Victor Valdes, with Spain making their seventh substitute, when only six were originally allowed.

In the 85th minute Rantie had a great chance to double the lead as he was played in by substitute Bongani Zungu, but with a one-on-one, Rantie's shot was saved by Reina.

Santi Cazorla tried a long range effort in the 91st minute, but Khune made a good diving save.

In the final minute of the game Khune pulled off a match-winning save from a shot by Alvaro Arbeloa, and South Africa held on to a famous victory.
