Masango Strike Maintains Chiefs Winning Run
Result: Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 Maritzburg United
Date: 27 September 2014
Venue: FNB Stadium
A first half penalty from Mandla Masango was enough to earn Kaizer Chiefs a 1-0 win over Marirzburg United in an Absa Premiership clash at the FNB Stadium.
Chiefs controlled the game right from the onset with Renielwe Letsholonyane pulling the strings, as he so often does, however they failed to create any openings inside the opening exchanges.
Maritzburg, meanwhile, almost took the lead against the run of play in the fifth, as Cele's long range effort sails inches wide of the upright.
Chiefs' best chance of the half arrived in the 34th minute, as Bernard Parker picked out George Maluleka with a lovely cross, however the midfielder could not steer his effort on target.
Maritzburg were quite happy to just sit back and let AmaKhosi have the ball, although the home side failed to take advantage of all the possession statistics.
However, Chiefs managed to break the deadlock before the halftime break as, Masango converted from the penalty spot, after Abel Mabaso had brought down Tsepo Masilela in the box.
The second half was played at a lower tempo, despite Chiefs still in control, however neither goalkeeper was seriously tested.
The first meaningful chance of the second half arrived in the 73rd minute, as Masango's long range effort forced Virgil Vries into a fine save.
The Chiefs defence were hardly troubled in the second 45 minutes, while Brilliant Khuzwayo had a quiet evening between the sticks.
