Kurt Abrahams Got His First Start In Europe Yesterday

You may not have heard of Kurt Abrahams yet, but the young South African has been moving up the ranks in Belgium, and yesterday was handed his first professional start.

The forward, who turned 20 in December, was chosen to lead the line for Sint-Truidense VV on Saturday as they took on Lierse in the Belgian UEFA Europa League playoffs, playing 58 minutes as his side went on to win 2-1.
Yesterday was Abrahams’ third appearance for the club having come through the youth ranks in recent years, but his first start after being used as a substitute against Waasland-Beveren and Standard Liege.
While he’s still waiting for his first goal, the South African did win a penalty – which was converted – in the first five minutes of his debut earlier this month, and he will be aiming to try and find the back of the net if given the chance next Saturday.
The striker went for trials with STVV in July 2015 thanks to his club, Cape United, and after they extended his time with them it was decided that they wanted to keep him on a long-term basis.
Abrahams, who was raised in Lavender Hill, went on to sign a three-year contract in Belgium – with a two-year option – and his performances for their youth side have now seen him make the step up into the professional ranks.
STVV are unbeaten in five games and are still in the running for a spot in next year’s UEL.
