Dutch goal machine Lars Veldwijk told Soccer Laduma he wants to play for Bafana Bafana and, gave more insights into his dream and how he could qualify for selection.
The 24-year-old striker is among the top marksmen in the Dutch Eredivisie, scoring 12 goals and assisting a further seven.
Veldvijk, who has a South Africa-born father, spoke exclusively to Soccer Laduma and explained why he hopes to come on Shakes Mashaba’s radar.
“Yes, first of all I would like to say that it maybe sounds a little bit weird that I want to play for Bafana Bafana because I’ve never visited South Africa, but I love football and I think Bafana Bafana has a great history,” he said.
“I know Benni McCarthy. I have watched a lot of football, especially the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and it was so great.
“I think the Netherlands standard is a little bit high for me but I think the South African level would be good for me... I don’t know.
Veldwijk is 1.97 meters tall and believes he could help to improve Bafana’s goal threat.
“I’m a big player... a big striker... 1.97 meters tall,” he added.
“People think I’m not fast but I’m not the slowest of players and what I can do is make goals. I score easily when I have the ball.
“I think I can score anywhere, because that’s my strength. If we play well and I get balls in the box, then I can score goals.”
