Option One: Fabio Canavaro (2006-2009)
Believed by many to be one of the greatest defenders to have ever played the game, Fabio Canavaro arrived at Real Madrid with a huge reputation. Having played for Italian giants Napoli, Inter Milan and then Juventus, he jetted off to the Spanish capital to sign for Real Madrid. In 2006 he became a FIFA World Cup Champion in Germany and then became the first defender in the 21st Century to win the Ballon d’Or. In his three years with Real, he made an incredible 106 appearances. The former Italian captain won LaLiga twice and the Spanish Super Cup once in the famous Real Madrid jersey.
Option Two: Sergio Ramos (2005-present)
Joining Real in 2005 from Sevilla, few would have thought that an out and out right back, would become one of the world`s most dynamic, controversial and talented centre-backs of his generation. His ability to distribute the ball from his own half, his aerial prowess, his goals, and overall leadership qualities have shone through for Madrid and Spain, although at times he may have taken it too far considering he has been sent off 25 times during his club career. He also currently holds the record for the most red cards across Europe’s top five leagues. To date, the defender has scored 84 club goals in his more that 600 appearances for Los Blancos, and is fifth in Real Madrid’s all-time appearance standings. Boasting four UEFA Champions League titles, four LaLiga titles, four FIFA Club World Cups, a 2010 FIFA World Cup triumph, and two European Championship victories, Ramos has won it all.
Option Three: Aitor Karanka (1997- 2002)
An uncompromising, no-nonsense central defender, Aitor Karanka joined Real Madrid after an impressive spell at Athletic Bilbao. Already established in LaLiga, he further strengthened a backline, which already included the likes of Fernando Hierro and Ivan Helguera. In his five years with Los Blancos, he won three UEFA Champions League titles, one LaLiga title, and one Intercontinental Cup. What makes his achievements even more astonishing, is that he was diagnosed with a heart condition between 1998 and 1999 but rallied back to make 149 appearances for Real Madrid.
