As we continue to celebrate 10 years of the Nedbank Cup, we at Soccer Laduma are looking back at all of the tournaments over the last decade.
This week we rewind to the 2011/12 edition of the competition when SuperSport United secured a Tshwane Derby win in the final, bagging the Nedbank trophy for the first time.
Thabo September and Kermit Erasmus were both on target in the final as Matsatsantsa beat Johan Neeskens’ Masandawana, with Gavin Hunt adding another medal to his cabinet.
However, the biggest story of this tournament was Sundowns’ demolition of Powerlines FC when they smashed 24 goals past the lower league outfit, setting a new South African scoring record in doing so. Hlompho Kekana scored seven goals that day.
Meanwhile, Free State Stars, who reached the semi-finals, beat both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in the competition as they pulled off a Soweto double, however, couldn’t make it past the Brazilians in the final four.
Sundowns’ Nyasha Mushekwi was named as the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament that year after scoring 10 goals in four games, while SuperSport's Thabiso Nkoana picked up the Young Player of the Tournament award.
