A total of 50 goals were scored in the first round of the tournament over the course of the last week, with a couple of upsets taking place as David managed to defeat Goliath in South Africa’s biggest cup competition.
The reigning champions, SuperSport United, made sure that they put their name in the hat for the next round after scraping past Royal Eagles, while their 2016 final opponents, Orlando Pirates, also cemented their spot with victory over lower league opposition, EC Bees.
Cape Town was left shocked after both of their top-flight sides, Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City, tumbled out of the tournament at the hands of ABC Motsepe League sides, KwaDukuza United and Acornbush United, with all of their Mother City neighbours also crashing out. There will be no side from the Western Cape in the last 16.
Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits – all of whom are in the chase for the Absa Premiership title – didn’t stumble against their ‘lesser’ opponents as they made sure they progressed, with only four teams outside the top-flight in the draw this evening.
Mbombela United, one of the two NFD sides in the pot, were the top scorers this round after putting five past Days FC, and Jomo Cosmos also progressed by beating United Rovers 3-0.
The draw is due to take place at 19h30 this evening and will completely unseeded. This means that anybody can draw anyone as we go into the Round of 16.
