The talented 23-year-old defender expressed much relief of finally playing in his first match for Pirates since signing for them late in the January transfer window.

“It’s great to get the first match out of the way. It was always a daunting prospect to finally get to play for such a big team with big expectations and, yes I was nervous but surprisingly the match got better as it went on because the guys were there for me and they helped me calm down and focus on the task at hand which is to play for Pirates,” Gumede told his club’s website.

“I am happy with the clean sheet as it shows we did well as a defensive unit and as a team in general. There is definitely room to improve but from here onwards it can only get better for me.”

On his aspirations for the remaining 11 league fixtures of the season, Gumede noted defending the Nedbank Cup and ensuring qualification to next season's Champions League were top of the list.

“Look we have a realistic chance of defending and retaining the Nedbank Cup. My personal goal, more than anything else is to be part of the generation of players that help Pirates re-capture the Champions League glory,” noted the Bucs star.
