MTN8 Quarterfinals Confirmed As Bucs Miss Out
Orlando Pirates won’t be playing in the MTN8 for the first time ever, but the eight clubs who did make it now know their first round opponents.
This weekend saw the final games of the Absa Premiership 2016/17 season played out across the country, with Mamelodi Sundowns securing CAF Champions League football while Chippa United and Free State Stars survived the drop on goal difference.
Pirates, who had never previously missed a top eight tournament in the PSL era, finished 11th as they were beaten by Golden Arrows on their way to pushing Platinum Stars down the table.
With the final league positions now confirmed, the eight clubs now know who stands between them and a spot in the semifinals of the competition for the new campaign.
Bidvest Wits will take on Arrows, Sundowns face Maritzburg United, Cape Town City gets underway against Polokwane City and it is Kaizer Chiefs against SuperSport United as fourth play fifth.
The rules state that the teams who finished in the top four will have home advantage in the quarterfinals of the competition, with R8m going to the winner of the tournament.
