The Premier Soccer League has announced that they have reached an agreement with MTN for an extension of their sponsorship of the MTN8.
The announcement was made today in Johannesburg. Addressing the media and clubs in Sandton this afternoon, PSL chairman Dr Irvin Khoza revealed the new five-year partnership with the mobile telecommunications company.
The PSL issued a statement confirming the sponsorship renewal details.
The Chairman of the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Dr. Irvin Khoza together with Chief Consumer Officer at MTN SA Larry Annette today announced the renewalof the MTN8 sponsorship for a further five years.
The new deal between PSL and MTN will run up to 2022. The announcement was made during the launch of the 2016/17 MTN8 season Johannesburg.
The PSL has also confirmed that the 2016/17 edition of the popular tournament will start on Friday, 26 August 2016. The top eight finishers of last season will be fighting it out for a whopping R8 million prize money in one of the most lucrative cup competitions on the African continent.
PSL Chairman, Dr Khoza said: “For the past eight years, MTN has been a valuable partner to the League, and as we renew our vows for a further five years of what has been a great partnership, we hope that this relationship will grow stronger and continue to be a mutually benefiting one. We thank MTN for once again trusting this strong brand of football to carry their message and to connect with the millions of passionate football supporters in this country. Through this renewal with MTN, we are once again reminded that football remains a very attractive platform for the corporate world.”
The MTN8 has been a permanent feature of the PSL season since 2008, and is synonymous with fantastic activities that excite football fans while offering MTN customers several opportunities to win big during the tournament.
This year will be no different as the MTN8 returns with “When they score, you score – R80 000 x number of goals scored”. This means that football will decide the ultimate prize as each goal scored in the tournament will see another R80 000 added into the pot for the ultimate prize.

MTNis also cementing the relationship between football and music by commissioning new school artists to remake popular old school tracks that will be available for download as MTN CallerTunez and will also serve as the entry mechanic into the MTN8 campaign.
“We know that music plays such an integral role in uniting football fans when rallying behind their teams, thus by bringing these special MTN8 tracks to the MTN8 fans, we believe it will create even more memorable stadium experiences during the tournament,” concluded Annetts.
