Cape Town City Eliminate Floundering Chiefs In MTN8

MTN8

Result: Cape Town City 1-0 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 26 August 2016

Venue: Cape Town Stadium

Cape Town City surprised Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 on Friday to secure their spot in the MTN8 semi-finals.

The first opportunity of the game arrived for City in the fifth minute when Bongolethu Jayiya floated a free kick into the Chiefs area, but no one could get on the end of it and Itumeleng Khune clutched the ball.

A minute later Lewis Macha produced Chiefs' first shot on target as he headed goalwards but Shu-Aib Walters made a reflex save.

Shortly thereafter City broke the deadlock. A rapid counter attack saw Matthew Sim receive the ball in acres of space, and he made no mistake with the rest as he calmly slotted the finish.

Amakhosi came close in the 32nd minute as they went in search of the equaliser. Tsepo Masilela swung in a cross from the left and Aubrey Modiba almost headed it past his own goalkeeper, but Walters saved.

City put pressure on their visitors again in the 38th minute when a poor touch from Ramahlwe Mphahlele almost gifted Lebogang Manyama with a great chance, but they survived.

However, the scorer remained 1-0 in favour of the home side at the halftime break.

Ten minutes into the second half Jayiya made his presence felt as he let rip with a shot from long range, but Khune did well to palm it away.

Just past the hour mark it was Chiefs who were on the attack. A cross came in for Macha at the far post, but he sent his shot wide.

At the other end of the pitch Roland Putsche had a great chance to score City's second when Aubrey Ngoma picked him out but he missed the target.

Chiefs piled on the pressure in the latter stages of the game, forcing Walters into a few top saves, while William Twala hit the woodwork but the visitors failed to find their leveller.

Here's how they lined up:

Cape Town City: 1 Walters, 4 Kobola, 27 Gumede, 3 Rode, 12 Modiba, 23 Matsi, 7 Sim, 19 Putsche, 10 Jayiya, 8 Manyama, 45 Majoro

Kaizer Chiefs: 32 Khune, 18 Moleko, 26 Gordinho, 24 Masilela, 2 Mphahlele, 31 Katsande, 35 Baloyi, 11 Chiramadare, 7 Twala, 25 Parker, 19 Macha
