Lionel Messi has jumped into joint first place in the top goalscorers in Europe ranking, while Cristiano Ronaldo now has little to no chance of lifting the Golden Shoe this season.

The Argentine netted a brace to help the Blaugrana secure a 3-2 win over Real Sociedad this past weekend, while Ronaldo was once again rested by Zinedine Zidane.

Messi has now scored 29 La Liga goals this season, equalling Edinson Cavani's tally of 29 Ligue 1 goals in first spot. This also means the Albiceleste talisman has now scored 10 more league goals than longstanding rival Ronaldo so far in this campaign.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang follows in joint third place alongside Robert Lewandowski, with 26 strikes each.

Romelu Lukaku extended his lead in the race to become the top goalscorer in the Premier league after netting his 24th goal of the campaign, while Gonzalo Higuain jumped into the top 10 and now sits just two strikes behind Serie A's joint leaders Edin Dzeko and Andrea Belotti.

Here are the top 10 goalscorers in Europe's top five leagues:

1) Lionel Messi (Barca) – 29 goals [+2 goals]

2) Edinson Cavani (PSG) – 29 goals

3) Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (BVB) – 26 goals [+1 goal]

4) Robert Lewandowski (Bayern) – 26 goals

5) Edin Dzeko (Roma) – 25 goals [+1 goal]

6) Andrea Belotti (Torino) – 25 goals [+1 goal]

7) Romelu Lukaku (Everton) – 24 goals [+1 goal]

8) Alexandre Lacazette (Lyon) – 24 goals

9) Luis Suarez (Barca) – 24 goals

10) Gonzalo Higuain (Juventus) – 23 goals [+2 goals]

Note: Messi leads the official Golden Shoe ranking with 58 (29x2) points. Due to UEFA's ranking of Europe's top leagues, the goals of Ligue 1's best goalscorer, Cavani, are only multiplied by 1.5, while Messi's strikes – as well as goals by players in the other top ranked leagues – are multiplied by 2.0. As a consequence, Cavani's 29 goals only earn him 43.5 (29x1.5) Golden Shoe points so far.
