Telmo Zarra’s daughter disputed that Lionel Messi broke her father’s all-time record because the Argentine needed more games.
Zarra scored his 251 goals in 278 games, while Messi needed 289 games to break Zarra’s milestone following his hat trick against Sevilla.
”Messi scored more goals but did not beat his record,” Carmen Zarra told Spanish radio station Cope.
"The record will be beaten when someone scores 251 goals in 267 matches [sic], but Messi needed 280 matches [sic]."
"We don’t know clear statistics for my father. Athletic said that he scored 251 on their website, but others sources said that he scored 253.
"Messi will overcome his figures because he is an excellent player but he played 12 matches more than my father.
"He scored more goals but I think that the media are wrong when say that he beat my father’s record."
Messi has scored his 253 goals over 11 seasons, while Zarra needed 15 seasons to net his 251 strikes.
At only 27, Messi still has plenty of time to extend his new La Liga all-time record with the clostest rival being Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 198 league goals for Real Madrid.
