The Poland striker netted his side's second, third and fifth goal to take his tally in the current qualification campaign to 15 goals.
Following his superb performance, Lewandowski has now scored one more goal than Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, who had earlier equalled the record for the most goals a single European qualifying campaign in August, against Faroe Islands.
Ronaldo, who can still add to his tally, matched Pedrag Mijatovic's record haul for Yugoslavia in 1998, with seven of the latter's 14 strikes coming from a 12-1 aggregate playoff win over Hungary.
Lewandowski now sits in outright first place in the ranking for the best scorer in a European qualifying campaign for a World Cup or EURO, as confirmed by UEFA, but Ronaldo could still match his tally with Portugal still having two matches left to play.
The Portuguese will travel to Andorra on Saturday before hosting group B leaders Switzerland on Tuesday. Poland, meanwhile, have just one qualifier left, when they host Montenegro on Sunday.
Lewandowski's side, who lead group E with three points ahead of second-placed Denmark, need one more point to secure their 2018 World Cup ticket.
