Real Madrid superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, has overtaken Lionel Messi after his brace in the UEFA Super Cup and has now scored 70 goals in European competitions.
The Portuguese opened the scoring against Sevilla in the 30th minute and scored his second just after the half-time break.
Before the game Ronaldo and Messi both sat on 68 goals in Europe, but the Portuguese’s goals number 69 and 70 means he now shares the second place with Filippo Inzaghi.
Ronaldo has scored 68 goals in the Champions League and two in the UEFA Super Cup and sits just six goals behind Raul, while Messi has scored 67 Champions League goals and one the UEFA Super Cup.
In April 2012, Ronaldo was 18 goals behind Messi, but in just slightly more than two years he has overtaken the Argentine after his sublime performances in the Champions League, scoring 29 goals in the last two editions.
The Ballon d’Or winner has also silenced his doubters, who thought he hadn’t fully recovered from his knee problems at the end of last season.
His two goals were also Ronaldo’s 253 and 254 in his 247th game for the Los Blancos. It was the 71st time he has scored at least two goals for Real in one game.
Last but not least, the brace helped the 29-year-old to finally win the only club trophy which had escaped him during his time at Manchester United and at Bernabeu.
