Pep Guardiola and Lionel Messi were seen chatting on their way to the dressing room after the half-time whistle on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second-leg between Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Barcelona were leading 2-1, and 5-1 on aggregate at the time, but instead of storming angrily to the dressing room, Guardiola took the time to hug and chat to Messi.
Although the exchange didn’t last long, it proves the high level of respect the two have for each other.
According to Sport English, the short dialogue went down like this:
Guardiola: “I’m delighted that you’re back again.”
Messi: “I never left.”
The Argentine confirmed before the game that he and Guardiola hadn’t spoken much after the Spaniard had left his role as Barcelona manager, which reportedly hit Messi hard.
Guardiola’s approach to chat to Messi was seen as breaking the ice between the two and it ended with a long overdue hug.
It is further reported that Guardiola went into the Barcelona dressing room after the game to congratulate his former players on reaching the Champions League final.
