Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to win the Golden Boot this season, but it seems his individual success curses his team rewards, as every time he ends as La Liga’s top goal-scorer, his team fails to win the league.
The Portuguese’s hat-trick against Espanyol took his tally to 45 goals this season, but Messi’s 41st strike of the campaign sealed the title for FC Barcelona.
It almost seems as though there is a curse over Ronaldo’s fortunes, as Marca pointed out.
The first time he was La Liga’s top marksman was back in 2010/11, the Portuguese scored 41 goals but Barcelona won the title.
Last season, he also won the ‘Pichichini’ trophy with 31 goals, but Real only finished in third place behind champions Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.
When Ronaldo won his only La Liga title, he ended up scoring a personal record of 46 goals, but Messi won the Pichichini trophy with 50 goals.
Messi also beat Ronaldo as the top goal-scorer in his first campaign in Spain, when the Argentine finished with 34 strikes and Ronaldo with 26 – Ronaldo teammate Gonzalo Higuain even had 27.
In 2012/13, Messi also clinched the Pichichini trophy with 46 goals, while Ronaldo scored 34.
However, the Argentine would have to score at least four goals to draw level with Ronaldo this season, whilst the Portuguese would have to draw a blank.
