Zinedine Zidane's Reason For Why He Substituted Cristiano Ronaldo
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has explained why he decided to substitute Cristiano Ronaldo against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
The Portuguese star reacted angrily after being taken off during the fixture, having failed to get on the score sheet in his side's 2-1 win at the San Mames.
The Frenchman did not go into much detail as to why he decided to substitute his star player, but it seems he did so thinking the victory was already secured.
"Ronaldo can be taken off from time to time, there's nothing more to it. He is just happy we won the game," Zidane told Sport.
"Cristiano gave a lot during the game. When you have to run up front it is more difficult, that's why we made those changes."
Zidane also praised his charges for becoming only the second side to beat Bilbao on their home turf this season.
"We were under the cosh at times but I think we show great character," he added.
"It was a really important time to keep the good run going. We knew how tough it would be to pick up points here."
The 32-year-old has scored 26 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions for Los Blancos so far this season.
