Three African stars have been nominated for the 2015/16 La Liga World Player of the Year award, but strangely Lionel Messi and Neymar were snubbed.
The La Liga awards will take place on 24 October, when the Spanish league celebrates its best performers of the 2015/16 campaign.
Traditionally, La Liga's best coach and best player per position – goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and striker – are chosen based on votes by the captains and vice captains of each club. In addition, the best overall player is determined via a statistical analysis.
Every season, La Liga also has a few additional awards, such as the best breakthrough player, the fair play player, best American player and the best African player.
However, this season it appears that the Spanish league has created a new award category in the 2015/16 World Player of the Year, seemingly for stars who were born outside of Europe.
La Liga announced a list of nine nominees, including three Africans, for the accolade, but strangely FC Barcelona superstars Messi and Neymar do not appear on the list, while Luis Suarez is the standout name among those nominated.
