United Off To Winning Start

Manchester United got their UEFA Champions League campaign off to a winning start with a 4-2 victory over German side Bayer Leverkusen at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

United dominated the first-half and went into the break with the lead after Wayne Rooney volleyed home - though it seemed that Antonio Valencia may have fouled the goalkeeper in the process.

Leverkusen responded after the break with Simon Rolfes scoring from a sensational strike but further goals from Robin van Persie, Antonio Valencia and Rooney wrapped up a comfortable win – even though Leverkusen scored a late second.

Shinji Kagawa was given a chance to start for the Red Devils, as was new signing Marouane Fellaini - and the latter set up the first real chance with a pass to Van Persie but the Dutchman fired wide.

United were in charge and saw Chris Smalling put a header onto the roof of the net before Rooney fired in the opener off of a cross from Patrice Evra.

Valencia saw an attempt blocked late in the first-half before Rooney and Kagawa both went close.

Sidney Sam tested David de Gea in the 51st minute and just a minute later Rooney should have squared to Van Persie for a tap in but he instead shot and got it all wrong from a tight angle.

That miss would be punished when Rolfes curled a sublime finish just inside the post with De Gea rooted to the spot.

Van Persie would then restore United's lead in equally impressive fashion with an audacious volley which seemed to catch the goalkeeper by surprise.

Rolfes would get another sight at goal in the 69th minute but, straight after saving the shot, De Gea thumped the ball forward and a poor header from the Leverkusen defence fell to Rooney who fired past the goalkeeper.

United then stormed forward on a counter in the 79th minute which ended with Rooney slipping a perfect pass to Valencia who thumped his finish in at the near post.

Leverkusen were gifted a second goal when De Gea came of his line and flapped at a corner which was sent onto the crossbar and Omer Toprak tucked away the rebound.

Van Persie somehow failed to bury Valencia's cross from two yards out in the dying minutes but United had done enough to secure the win.
