United Fight For A Point

Manchester United escaped the Ukraine with a point after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in their UEFA Champions League group stage clash on Wednesday.

No English team has enjoyed success at the Donbass Arena and despite taking the lead along with some sturdy defensive work, United had to sweat in the final few minutes as Shakhtar looked for a late win.

United were hit by the news that Wayne Rooney would not feature due to a shin injury picked up in training, while manager David Moyes picked Tom Cleverly ahead of Shinji Kagawa for the encounter.

Robin van Persie turned his defender well at the edge of the area in the eighth minute but the Dutchman curled his effort well off target.

Alex Teixeira hit the deck dramatically in the 14th minute with Tom Cleverly sliding in but the referee waved away his appeals.

United were organised in defence and frustrating the home side. They would then find the opening goal in the 18th minute when Marouane Fellaini was allowed to get to the byline and although a defender got a touch to stop his low cross, Danny Welbeck was following up to fire home.

Rafael then had to block a shot from Tomas Hubschman while Teixeira rifled a shot over after some pinball in the United area.

Shakhtar were unable to find a way through despite some decent spells of possession and Teixeira had their last chance of the half but produced a weak shot which David de Gea dealt with easily.

Chances remained hard to come by though Shakhtar were working their socks off to try and get back into the game.

Robin van Persie had a great chance to add a second for United against the run of play but the forward failed to get his shot past the defender.

Taison, who had been one of the brightest players for the home side, finally got their reward when Nemanja Vidic's block fell kindly for him and he smashed his shot into the roof of the net.

De Gea then had to tip the ball over after a cross had come off one of his defenders and arrowed toward goal.

Shakhtar tried to keep the intensity and looked for a late winner but United took the heat out of the game and eventually left with a point.
