SL's Top Managers: 10- Miguel Munoz

10. Miguel Munoz (1922-1990), Real Madrid, Spain

Hardly any of Real Madrid’s contemporary legion of global fans will have heard of Miguel Munoz, but he deserves his place on Soccer-Laduma’s list of the best-ever football managers.

A Madridista through and through, Munoz was at the helm at the Bernabeu during arguably Los Blancos’ most successful era.

Born in Madrid, Munoz played as a midfielder for Los Blancos from 1948 to 1958, winning four La Liga titles and three European Cups, scoring their first ever goal in the competition.

He became manager of the team in 1960 after a brief apprenticeship as boss of their reserve side, Plus Ultra.

Under the guidance of Munoz, Real Madrid annexed La Liga’s crown, and won the title a stunning five times in a row from 1961 to 1965.

In total, Munoz led Los Blancos to nine Spanish top-flight titles, helping establish them as the most successful Spanish team of all time.

Significantly, Munoz also led Los Blancos to two European Cup titles, becoming the first man in history to win the trophy as both player and manager.

In 1960, Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 in the European Cup final, still a record score for the competition and one that is unlikely to be surpassed.

In 1966, they were given a run for their money but emerged 2-1 winners over Partizan Belgrade.

After his Real Madrid career, Munoz bundled about La Liga for seven more seasons at Granada, Las Palmas and Sevilla, before taking the reins of the Spanish national team in 1982.

As boss of La Furia Roja, Munoz confirmed his status as one of football’s best ever coaches, taking the then serial under-achievers to the final of Euro ’84, where they lost to Michel Platini-inspired hosts France. Two years later Munoz also took Spain to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Mexico.

Today, Real Madrid are rightly proud of their status as Spain’s most winning club, both at home and in Europe.

But they would not enjoy that status without the stellar achievements of Miguel Munoz, number 10 on Soccer Laduma’s list of all-time coaching greats.
