Shock Loss For Chelsea

Two goals in the final 20 minutes of their match saw Chelsea give up a one goal lead after they lost 2-1 to FC Basel in their opening Group E UEFA Champions League match at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

It was a shock result after Oscar gave the home side the lead before goals in the 71st minute from Mohamed Salah and in the 81st minute from Marco Streller handed Basel the surprise win.

It was a lively first half for Chelsea who controlled the possession stakes, but for all their dominance they were unable to really create regular chances on goal.

The first real opening fell to Chelsea in the 26th minute as Samuel Eto’o played Eden Hazard through on goal, but he fired high and wide of the target.

Finally, in the dying seconds of the half Chelsea were able to make their pressure tell as Oscar grabbed the opening goal after latching onto a pass into the box from Frank Lampard and then produced a clinical finish from roughly 16-yards out, 1-0.

The second half saw Chelsea continue in the same vein and they were unlucky not to double their lead in the 56th minute when Oscar struck the woodwork with a curling shot from just outside the box.

Oscar turned provider six minutes later when he played Hazard in on the left side of the box, but he fired inches wide of the post.

Basel would make Chelsea pay for their missed chances when Salah equalised in the 71st minute as he cut in from the right and powered a left-footed shot into the corner of the goal, 1-1.

Ten minutes later and Basel took the lead after Streller got in front of Gary Cahill to head home a corner, 2-1, to pick up a surprising win on the night.'
