Whilst the race for the FIFA Ballon d’Or is heating up, the Spanish Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP) Awards were presented on Monday evening.
Lionel Messi won the official ‘Player of the Season 2012-13’ award ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Barcelona attacker won the award for the fifth successive year and also edged Ronaldo for the award of the ‘best forward’.
“I would like to thank the LFP and the Liga BBVA for this prize,” Messi said. “It is a recognition of the [Barca players] work all year and without them I would not have scored these goals.”
But Ronaldo didn’t leave with empty bags as he was chosen as La Liga’s ‘Most Valuable Player’ for the 2012-13 season. However, the Real Madrid star indicated in his speech that he would have preferred the award for the overall best player.
“It is an honour and privilege to receive this great award for the Most Valuable Player - it motivates me to keep working harder,” Ronaldo said. “I am proud to be in the Liga BBVA. For me, this is the best league in the world and I am at the best club in the world. How could I not be happy? Hopefully next year I can win the award for the best player. I will be working towards it.”
Diego Simeone was crowned La Liga’s ‘best coach’ for his performances with Atletico Madrid, which was his first individual prize as a coach.
Other awards went to:
Andres Iniesta (best attacking midefielder)
Asier Illarramendi (best defensive midfielder & ‘breakthrough’ player)
Sergio Ramos (best defender)
Thibaut Courtois (best goalkeeper)
Iker Casillas (Fair Play trophy)
